The Three Perspectives of Digitalisation in Management Consultancy

Robert Bodenstein CMC©, ICMCI Chair

The changes in the manner of work driven by technology were in the spotlight of an online discussion on Tech Innovation in Consulting on 22 June 2022 as part of the ICMCI Future of Management Consultancy initiative. The roundtable brought together Christopher Harper CMC, Dr. Stephen Louis CMC, Hadis Nazari, Mohammadreza Mahmoodi and Bob Hruska and was moderated by ICMCI Chair Robert Bodenstein CMC.

In his opening, Robert Bodenstein outlined three distinct perspectives of digitalisation in Management Consultancy:

  • Digital fitness: availability of basic know-how about IT, certain standard business software, knowledge about current developments.
In practice, every management consultant should have this level because it is also a part of what clients want and expect.
  • Digital service delivery: how consultants digitalise their services and what the impacts of digitalisation are on the way consultant we deliver their services.
It might take the form of new services, improvement of existing ones, or new business models.
  • Ability to support clients in their digitalisation strategy and to enable them to take the next step in their business with regards to digitalisation.

The first two perspectives are on side of management consultants while the third perspective combines consultants and clients.

Management consultants need to do their homework and master the first two perspectives in order to be able to answer client questions about the digital journey.
